What does the Treasurer-Tax Collector do?
The Treasurer-Tax Collector is elected by the voters and charged by the State of California to enforce the California State Revenue and Taxation Code which includes the collection of various taxes. The county tax collector primarily collects property taxes that fund the activities of local government of the county including the school system. The tax collector does not determine how much to collect. The county assessor determines the value of a parcel and gives the value information to the county auditor who applies the tax rates and special assessments to the tax bill. The auditor then charges the tax collector with the collection of the tax bill. If you have questions about the value of your property you should contact the county assessor’s office at (805) 654 2181.
